The cost of rescuing a pony can vary depending on the auction, the pony’s condition, and the level of care they need once they arrive at the rescue.

The initial cost may include the auction purchase price and transportation, followed by veterinary care, farrier work, feed, medications, and any additional medical or rehabilitation needs.

Some ponies may need only basic care, while others arrive requiring extensive veterinary treatment and ongoing support. Every pony is different, and every donation helps us provide the care they need once they are safely out of the auction system.

What Does It Typically Cost?

For a pony with no major medical issues, the average costs may look something like this:

• Diesel fuel to and from the auction: $600
This varies depending on fuel prices and the distance traveled.

• Average pony purchase price: $800

• Initial veterinary visit: $350

• Farrier: $60

• Hay: $21

Estimated total: $1,831

Please keep in mind that this is a general guideline, not an all-inclusive cost. It does not include items such as halters, lead ropes, fly masks, fly spray, medications, additional veterinary care, or any other supplies a pony may need.

These numbers are averages and can fluctuate significantly from one rescue trip to another. We can also reduce the transportation cost per pony when we are able to rescue multiple ponies on the same trip, as the fuel cost is then spread across several rescues.

Why We Rescue From Auctions

As an animal rescue, our goal is not to compete with legitimate buyers who are looking for ponies to bring into good homes. We focus on the ponies who are unwanted, neglected, or at risk of being purchased by kill buyers and sent to feedlots or kill pens.

We are not looking to spend large amounts on fancy, highly sought-after ponies that already have good placement opportunities. Instead, we focus our resources on the ponies who have nowhere else to go.

We rescue them from the auction system, give them a safe place to land, provide the care they need, and give them the chance at a completely different future.

Every donation helps make that possible.
